POLAROID PORTRAITS

Newly arrived in Los Angeles in 1989, I had very little money and knew very few people. But I wanted to make art! I met the artist and musician, Dennis John Mason, who had a Polaroid Sun 660 instant camera. Together he and I created the Polaroid series, portraits with a single light source on 600 film. We shared the cost of the photos, which then were a dollar per picture. Every picture really counted. We took photographs of each other from 1990-2001.

I also wanted to show the beauty of the male form. So often in art, the female form is the site of visual pleasure. With my Polaroid Portraits, I hoped to convey the visual pleasure of the male form.

With a Polaroid Impulse SE on 600 film, I've also photographed: Anthony (2012), Grace (2011), Wayne (2000), Tyler (1997), the collective, Revolution Rising (a collective formed with me by people who met in riot grrrl: Dani, Dawn, Debbie, Marie-Pierre, and Sisi, 1994), Atam (1993), Gina (1991), Nadine (1991), and Tommy (1991).
